Group submissions

In group work, one member often submits the whole team's work. DeepMarking links the team so every member is marked on it, and marks individual criteria, such as a reflection, for each student on their own work.

How DeepMarking knows it is group work

It reads the spec for phrases such as "This is a group assessment" or "in teams of three". On a saved project you can set it yourself with Work: From the spec, Individual or Group.

For group work, the panel shows a line such as "Group assessment: 24 students detected in 8 groups".

How members are linked

1. Every student in the upload is on the class list, with or without files of their own.
2. Each submission is searched for other students on that list, by student ID or full name, for example on a cover page or in a contribution table.
3. Students named on the same submission are joined into one team.
4. A member whose own files do not contain the team's work is given the team's files to be marked on.
5. A student named on a team submission, with both name and ID, but missing from your upload gets their own entry, flagged for you to confirm. This stops their mark being missed.

Individual work is never linked.

How group work is marked

• Group criteria are marked once and every member of the team gets the same mark.
• Individual criteria, such as a reflection or a contribution statement, are marked separately for each student, on that student's own work only.

Each member is still marked as a submission of their own, so each member uses one marking credit.

Check the teams

Before marking, choose View and check the list. If the summary says "no groups found", the submissions did not name other students on the list. The students can still be marked individually.

After marking, open a few members of each team and check that group criteria match and individual criteria differ where they should.

If group work is detected by mistake

Set Work to Individual. Students are then marked only on their own files.
