Upload a ZIP from your LMS

Updated

Download all submissions from your LMS as one ZIP and drop it on the upload panel. DeepMarking unpacks it in your browser and groups the files into one submission per student.

Steps

  1. In your LMS, download all submissions for the assignment as a ZIP.
  2. In DeepMarking, drop the ZIP on the upload panel, or choose Add submissions.
  3. Wait for the files to be read. The panel then shows a line such as "38 student submissions detected".
  4. Choose View to check the list before you mark.

How files are matched to students

DeepMarking reads the names your LMS gives the files and folders:

LMSWhat it reads
MoodleThe student ID and full name at the start of each file name
CanvasThe student's Canvas user ID and name in each file name
BlackboardThe username in each file name
BrightspaceThe student's name in each folder name

If none of these patterns fit, DeepMarking uses a top-level folder named after the student, then the file name.

When a file name gives only a short or squashed name, as Canvas and Blackboard do, DeepMarking looks for a line such as "Student Name:" or "Student ID:" on the cover page and uses that instead.

A ZIP or folder inside a student's submission, such as a zipped app project, is treated as part of that student's work.

Check the list

In the list opened by View you can:

  • Check each name and student ID.
  • Remove a student with the close button on their row.
  • Enter days late for each student.

Dropping the same ZIP again does not add the same students twice.

Tell DeepMarking which LMS you use

After marking, the project card has an LMS setting. It starts on Auto-detect, or you can choose Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace or Other or none. This decides which grade file DeepMarking can offer. See Export grades to your LMS.

Marking sheets in the download

If you attached a marking sheet to the assignment, your LMS includes a copy in every student's files. DeepMarking leaves these out. See Why marking sheets in a download are skipped.

Common questions

A student appears under the wrong name. What should I do?
The name comes from the file names in the download, then from the cover page. Check the student list with View before marking, and remove any entry that is wrong.
Can I upload individual files instead of a ZIP?
Yes. Select or drop several files at once. DeepMarking groups them by the names in the file names in the same way.
