Getting started
- Can I trust the AI marks without checking them?
No. Treat every mark as a suggestion. Our Terms of Service say AI outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete or biased, and that you remain responsible for final grades.
- Do I need my own Gemini or OpenAI key?
No. DeepMarking uses its own platform credentials for every AI call. There is no option to add a personal key.
- Do I have to name my files in a special way?
No. DeepMarking reads spreadsheets to decide whether they are a rubric or student work, and asks you when it is unsure. You can also drop a file on the Spec, Rubric or Submissions slot to say exactly what it is.
- Why did the guest try use my network allowance when I have not marked anything?
The guest allowance is one marking per network, not per person. On shared networks such as campus Wi-Fi, someone else may have used it. Create a free account to keep marking.
- Can I check marks on my phone after marking on my laptop?
No. Every signed-in page, including results, is blocked on phones. Use a tablet or computer to review marks.
Account and login
- Does DeepMarking cost anything to sign up?
No. New accounts start on the Free plan, which needs no card. See the free plan article for what it includes.
- My activation link has expired. What now?
Go back to the Check your email page and choose Resend email, or sign up again with the same address. A fresh link is valid for 24 hours.
- I did not get the reset email.
Check your spam folder and make sure you used the address you signed up with. If you signed up with Google, LinkedIn or X, you may not have a password to reset: sign in with that provider instead.
- Can I get my account back after deleting it?
No. Deletion is permanent. You can sign up again with the same email, but your earlier projects and marks will not come back.
- Why is there no password box for my account?
Accounts created with Google, LinkedIn or X confirm deletion by typing DELETE MY ACCOUNT instead of a password.
Plans, billing and credits
- Does a credit depend on how long the AI takes or how much it writes?
No. A credit is a marked submission. Only the size of the work the marker reads can move a submission from 1 credit to 2.
- Does re-marking a submission cost another credit?
Yes. Each re-mark is charged. It also clears any criteria you had confirmed on that submission and takes back its review reward.
- Does the free allowance roll over if I skip a day?
No. Free resets to one marking at midnight each day. Unused days do not add up.
- Does reading my rubric or spec use my daily marking?
No. Reading criteria from a rubric file, pasted text or the spec works on every plan and uses no credits. Only marking a submission counts.
- Do unused credits roll over to next month?
No. Your plan allowance refills on the first of each month and unused plan credits do not carry over. Unspent review reward credits are kept separately.
- Is there a charge for cancelling?
No. You keep access until the end of the period you have paid for, then move to Free.
Projects and rubrics
- What if my rubric uses descriptors or bands rather than one mark per criterion?
DeepMarking needs a maximum mark for each criterion. Add a marks column to your sheet, or paste each criterion with its maximum mark at the end of the line.
- Can DeepMarking write a rubric for me from the spec?
On a paid plan, yes. When you have added the spec and the submissions but no rubric, DeepMarking offers to draft one from the criteria in the spec, and you check it before it is used. On any plan it can copy a criteria table that is already in the spec.
- Which strictness should I start with?
Strict is the default because looser settings tended to give close to full marks on nearly every submission. Mark a few students, review them, and change it only if the marks are consistently too harsh.
- Does changing Penalty / day cost credits?
No. Penalties are calculated from the marks you already have. Only marking or re-marking a submission uses credits.
Uploading submissions
- Are my students' original files uploaded to DeepMarking?
No. Files are opened in your browser. DeepMarking receives the extracted text, the images the marker can read and a list of file names, and keeps the text each submission was marked from.
- Can the marker read a student's Excel workbook?
Not at present. A spreadsheet in a submission is listed by name only, and criteria that depend on it are flagged for you to review.
- A student appears under the wrong name. What should I do?
The name comes from the file names in the download, then from the cover page. Check the student list with View before marking, and remove any entry that is wrong.
- Can I upload individual files instead of a ZIP?
Yes. Select or drop several files at once. DeepMarking groups them by the names in the file names in the same way.
Marking and review
- Do I need to keep my computer on while marking runs?
Not usually. Once the run has started, marking continues on our servers. Keep the tab open only if your browser warns you when you try to leave, which means the run is happening in the tab.
- Can I mark two assessments at the same time?
No. One marking run at a time. Start the next once the first has finished or been stopped.
- Do I have to confirm every criterion?
No. Confirming is how you record that you have checked a mark, and it earns review rewards. Marks export whether or not they are confirmed.
- Will my changes be lost if I re-mark the student?
Yes. Re-marking replaces the marks and comments, clears confirmations and takes back the review reward. Your quality rating stays.
- Why is Mark again greyed out?
Everyone in the project is already marked. Tick the students you want to mark again, or change a setting, and the button becomes available.
Exporting results
- Why is a student missing from my export?
Exports include only students who have been marked. Students who are unmarked or failed are left out. Mark or retry them, then download again.
- Can DeepMarking send grades to my LMS directly?
No. DeepMarking prepares the file, and you upload it to your LMS yourself.
- My LMS rejected the grade file. What now?
Upload your LMS's own grade export on the project card and use the Fill my grade export option. It keeps your LMS's own layout, so it always matches.
Privacy and data
- Does DeepMarking sell student data?
No. Our Privacy Policy states that we do not sell student personal data.
- Can I restore a project I deleted by mistake?
No. Deletion is permanent. If you still have the files, start a new marking and mark them again.
