Late penalties

The late penalty is a percentage of the rubric's total, taken off for each whole day a submission is late. You set the percentage in Penalty / day and the days late for each student.

Set the rate

Penalty / day sits with the other settings. It starts at 5, meaning 5% of the rubric total per day. Enter any value from 0 to 100. Enter 0 to turn penalties off.

If your spec states a late penalty as a percentage per day, DeepMarking uses that rate when you add the spec, unless you have already typed your own.

Enter days late

DeepMarking does not work out lateness from the files. Every student starts at 0 days late.

• In the results list, type the number in the student's delay field. Its tooltip reads "Days late, used for the late penalty".
• Or open the student and edit Delay (day) on their result card.

Enter whole days. Press Enter or click away to save, or press Escape to cancel. The mark updates straight away. No re-marking is needed and no credits are used.

How it is worked out

Deduction = rubric total × days late × penalty per day ÷ 100.

For a rubric worth 30 marks, a 5% daily penalty and 2 days late: 30 × 2 × 5 ÷ 100 = 3 marks off. A student with 24 before the penalty ends on 21.

The penalty is based on the rubric's total, not the student's score, so every late student loses the same amount per day. A final mark never goes below 0. If Total marks differs from the rubric total, the penalty is taken first and the result is then scaled.

On exported sheets

Each student's marking sheet shows Days submitted late and Late submission penalty with the daily rate. In the Excel sheet these cells are formulas, so if you change a mark or the days late in Excel, the total updates.

Extensions

DeepMarking has no separate extension setting. Enter the days late after any extension you have granted. For approaches to extensions, see our guide Late penalties and extensions.
