What DeepMarking does and does not do
DeepMarking reads your assessment spec, your marking rubric and your students' submissions, then suggests a mark and a comment for every criterion. You review those suggestions, change anything you disagree with, and export the results.
What it does
- Reads PDF and Word documents, plain text, source code and images. A ZIP downloaded from your LMS is unpacked and sorted into one submission per student.
- Marks each student against every criterion in your rubric and writes a comment for each one.
- Applies your late penalty and scales marks to your total marks.
- Flags criteria it could not judge with confidence, so you know where to look first.
- Exports marking sheets to Excel and PDF, and fills in the grade file you download from your LMS.
What it does not do
- It does not issue final grades. AI marks support your professional judgement. You remain responsible for reviewing, editing and issuing final grades.
- It does not watch videos or run code. A video is listed by name only. Code is read and reasoned about, not executed. Criteria that depend on something the marker cannot open are flagged for you.
- It does not work out lateness. You enter the number of days late for each student.
- It does not connect to your LMS. You download submissions from your LMS, upload them to DeepMarking, then upload the grade file back to your LMS yourself.
- It does not keep your students' original files. They are read on your computer. DeepMarking keeps the text each submission was marked from.
- It does not run on phones. Use a tablet, laptop or desktop computer.
Which AI it uses
Marking runs on Google Gemini through DeepMarking's own account. You cannot add your own AI key, and you do not need one.

Common questions
- Can I trust the AI marks without checking them?
- No. Treat every mark as a suggestion. Our Terms of Service say AI outputs may be inaccurate, incomplete or biased, and that you remain responsible for final grades.
- Do I need my own Gemini or OpenAI key?
- No. DeepMarking uses its own platform credentials for every AI call. There is no option to add a personal key.
