Your first marking run

Marking needs three things: the assessment spec, the marking rubric and at least one student submission. Add all three, check the settings, then press Start marking.

With an account

  1. Sign in and choose New marking in the sidebar. The page says Start your marking.
  2. Drop your files on the upload panel, or click it to choose them. You can drop the spec, the rubric and the student files together. DeepMarking sorts them by file name and content, and ticks off Assessment specs, Marking rubrics and Student submissions as each one lands.
  3. No file for the spec or the rubric? Under the drop area, choose Paste the spec or the marking criteria and paste the text instead.
  4. Once students are found, the panel shows how many, for example "38 student submissions detected". Click View to check the names before you mark.
  5. Check the settings under the panel: Total marks, Penalty / day, Strictness and Assessment type. They save as you change them.
  6. Press Start marking for one student, or Mark all when several are detected. You can also press Mark on a single row.
  7. Open each student to review the marks, then export.

Until you press Start marking, nothing is saved. From that point the marking is a project and appears in your sidebar under Recents.

On the free plan

The free plan marks one submission a day. You can upload a whole class, but only the first student can be marked. Pressing Mark all with more than one student detected asks you to upgrade. See The free plan.

Without an account

The home page has the same upload panel, so you can try DeepMarking before you sign up.

  • Add a spec, a rubric and at least one submission, then press Start marking.
  • Only the first detected student is marked.
  • The guest try marks against three general criteria (content and understanding, structure and clarity, evidence and referencing) and uses your rubric text as guidance. An account marks against the criteria in your own rubric.
  • The result appears on the page and is not saved.
  • Each network gets one free guest marking. After that you see Free guest marking used. Your files stay loaded, so you can choose Sign up for free and carry on.

Hover over Start marking. The hint names what is missing, such as "Marking needs an assessment spec".

Common questions

Do I have to name my files in a special way?
No. DeepMarking reads spreadsheets to decide whether they are a rubric or student work, and asks you when it is unsure. You can also drop a file on the Spec, Rubric or Submissions slot to say exactly what it is.
Why did the guest try use my network allowance when I have not marked anything?
The guest allowance is one marking per network, not per person. On shared networks such as campus Wi-Fi, someone else may have used it. Create a free account to keep marking.
