What a marking credit is

Updated

One marking credit pays for marking one student submission. Every plan's allowance is counted in marking credits.

How much one submission costs

A submission costs 1 credit in almost every case, including large ones such as an app project with a written report, source code and two dozen screenshots.

A very large submission costs 2 credits. The marker reads at most 220,000 characters of text and 24 images from any one submission, so 2 credits is the most a single submission can cost.

What uses credits

  • Marking a submission.
  • Marking it again. Each re-mark is charged like a new marking.

What is free

  • Reading your files, including extracting text from PDF and Word documents.
  • Reading the criteria from your rubric or from the spec.
  • Resolving flagged items with Resolve.
  • A marking that fails. Failed submissions are not charged.
  • A submission with no readable work in it.

Where to see your credits

  • Account menu: the meter at the top shows what is left today (Free) or this month (paid plans).
  • Usage: open the account menu, choose Profile, then Usage. It shows what you have used, what remains, any Review rewards, and when your allowance resets.
  • Project header: shows the credits this project has used and what you have left.
  • Results list: the Credits column shows what each submission cost. Open a student to see Marking cost on their result card.

Running out

When your credits run out part way through a run, marking stops and you see Out of marking credits, with View plans to upgrade. Students already marked keep their marks. If you had closed the tab, the notice reads "Marking stopped" when you come back.

Review rewards

Confirming the AI's marks earns bonus credits, up to 3 per submission. Bonus credits are spent before your plan's credits. See Review and change marks.

Common questions

Does a credit depend on how long the AI takes or how much it writes?
No. A credit is a marked submission. Only the size of the work the marker reads can move a submission from 1 credit to 2.
Does re-marking a submission cost another credit?
Yes. Each re-mark is charged. It also clears any criteria you had confirmed on that submission and takes back its review reward.
