When marking is unavailable or a run fails
Updated
Sometimes marking cannot run, or a student cannot be marked. A failed student is never charged, and students already marked keep their marks.
The maintenance page
If you see We'll be right back with "DeepMarking is temporarily down for maintenance. Please check again in a few minutes.", marking is paused for everyone. It shows during planned maintenance, and when the marking service is not responding.
- Choose Check again to reload the page.
- Your projects and marks are not changed while it shows.
- The Help centre, the Guides, the results demo, and About, Contact, Privacy and Terms stay open.
A student shows Failed
Open the student to read the Note to reviewer. It starts "Could not be marked." and gives the reason:
| Reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| Marking did not finish for this submission. Retry in a minute. | The AI service was briefly unavailable. Retry the student |
| Marking is unavailable right now. Please try again shortly. | Wait a few minutes, then retry |
| Marking was interrupted. Retry this student. | Retry the student |
| Marking stopped on the server. Try again. | Retry the student |
| The upload for this student did not arrive. Upload it again. | Add the student's files again |
| Could not reach the server. Check your connection and try again. | Check your connection, then retry |
| Submission is too large to mark in one request. Remove large images or split files. | Remove large images or split the files, then add them again |
The project card shows how many failed, for example "2 failed". If the run finished while you were away, the notice reads "Marking finished" with how many were marked and how many failed.
DeepMarking already tries again for a short while before it gives up on a student, so a Failed status means the problem lasted. Failed students are not retried on their own.
Retry failed students
- In the results list, tick each Failed row.
- Press Mark N selected on the project card.
The retry uses the text DeepMarking kept, so you do not need to upload the files again. It is charged only when it succeeds. See Re-mark and retry.
A run stops before the end
- You pressed Stop marking: you see "Marking stopped". The student being marked may still finish.
- Your credits ran out: you see Out of marking credits. See What a marking credit is.
- The run stopped responding: a daily check ends it, and students still waiting show "Marking stopped on the server. Try again." Retry them.
Students marked before the run stopped keep their marks.
When to contact us
Contact us if the same student fails again after a retry, or if the maintenance page does not clear. Include the project's short title and the reason shown in the note.
Common questions
- Am I charged for a student that failed?
- No. A failed student uses no credits. A retry is charged only when it succeeds.
- Will DeepMarking retry failed students by itself?
- No. It tries again briefly before it marks a student Failed. After that, tick the failed rows and press Mark N selected.
