Start marking and background marking

Press Start marking, or Mark all when several students are detected. Marking usually runs on DeepMarking's servers, so you can close the tab and come back later.

Start a run

1. Add the spec, the rubric and the submissions.
2. Check Total marks, Penalty / day, Strictness and Assessment type.
3. Press Start marking or Mark all. To mark one student, press Mark on their row.

The button stays grey until the spec, a rubric with at least one criterion and at least one submission are in place. Hover over it to see what is missing.

Follow progress

While a run is going, the panel shows a line such as "Marking 3 of 40 · Jane Smith". Students are marked one at a time, and each mark appears in the list as it is saved.

Closing the tab

Your files are read in your browser first. Each student's extracted text and images are then sent to private storage and marked on our servers, one student after another. You can close the tab, open another project or shut your laptop.

When you come back, a notice tells you how it went, for example "Marking finished" with the project name and Open. If your credits ran out, it says "Marking stopped" instead.

If background marking is unavailable, DeepMarking marks in your open tab instead. You can move around inside DeepMarking, but closing or reloading the tab stops the run, and your browser warns you before you leave.

Stop a run

Press Stop marking. The student being marked at that moment may still finish and appear shortly afterwards. Students not yet reached stay unmarked.

One run at a time

You can run one marking at a time. Starting another while one is going shows Marking is already running.

Credits

Each student uses credits as they are marked. If you run out part way, the run stops and you see Out of marking credits. Students already marked keep their marks. See What a marking credit is.
